Laugh About It Interviews the Owner of The Garden City's Newest Restaurant

We caught up with Austin Fowl, owner of the City’s newest restaurant My Chicken Is A Jerk so we could learn more.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. So you sell Jerk Chicken?

No. What gave you that idea?

The name of your restaurant says “Jerk Chicken” doesn’t it?

No. It says, “My Chicken Is A Jerk.” Have you ever met him?

Uh... well no, I haven’t.

Well you’d know if you did that he’s a real-

OK, I get your point. Not a pleasant chicken. So what kind of food do

you serve then?

Mostly edible.

Oh. OK. This interview isn’t really going as planned. Let’s try this. What’s on your menu?

Mostly words. The odd picture.

Well, yes of course, but what are those words describing?

Mostly the food I serve.

OK. Yes. But what food do you serve?!!

I told you.

You just said it was mostly edible.

Are you saying it’s not?

Um, no. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just trying to get a sense of what’s

on your menu so my readers can have an idea what to expect.

Expect when?

When they come to your restaurant!

Why would they do that?

Well don’t you want them to?!

Not particularly.

Then why did you open a restaurant?

It was the chicken’s idea. I don’t even cook. Fact is, I don’t even like

restaurants and don’t want to work in one.

Then why would your chicken suggest you open a restaurant?

I told you. He’s a real-

Yes, yes. Unpleasant chicken. I remember. Well, now that you are open

and you are serving food and you do have a menu with words on it, is

there anything on your menu you would recommend?

Well, not the chicken.

I think you and your chicken have a lot in common.

St. Catharines is attracting entrepreneurs like never before. One exciting new venture is Chlora Phyl’s Plant Day Care. We caught up with Chlora for a brief chat and to see what this new centre was all about.

Upon entering the space, I was greeted by the sound of soft classical music. I began to introduce myself but was immediately shushed. “Shhh,” said Chlora, “It’s nap time.” Chlora’s new plant day care, Tranquil Gardens, is just what the name suggests, a place to bring your plants for the day when

you are at work.  “A lot of people don’t want to leave their plants at home alone all day,” explained Phyl, “especially if they only own one. They get very lonely, you know? We take them in and keep them happy and occupied all day.” When I asked what that meant, she answered, “We keep our plant friends very engaged. We have story hour, play time, lunch and snack, and we even have day trips to places like the zoo and the beach.” I asked Chlora if she actually believed that the plants had any idea if they were at home, in a centre, or on a day trip. “Of course they do,“ she told me. “Plants are people too you know!” I wondered aloud if she had ever lost a plant on one of the centre’s outings. “Never!” she replied. “We make sure each plant has a buddy and they all wear a centre T-shirt, and if they try to move away from the group they definitely get a time-out.” With that I left the centre quietly so as not to awaken the napping plants.
